On a Good Day

On a good day, Dr. Newman, When I close my eyes I see Me holding close my youngest On the day she's twenty-three. On a good day, Dr. Newman, Between the swearing and the sweat As I wrestle with the laundry Why, I very near forget. On a good day, Dr . Newman, I admire a Sisley sky, Buy some flowers on the corner, Kiss the daughter who is shy. On a good day, Dr. Newman, I sip bubbles from a glass, Play a family game of Yahtzee And allow the night to pass. On a good day, Dr. Newman, I will barely think of scars, Or of terror, drugs or needles. No, I'll show my girls the stars. On a good day, Dr. Newman, I pretend I'm good as new And that the months go on and on Until I sit with you. On a good day, Dr. Newman, I will never die, no, never. But on a bad day, Dr. Newman, There is God and there's Forever.
